The first original Madame Tussauds was opened in 1835, when the ‘mother’ of wax figures, Marie Tussaud, decided to set up a permanent exhibition in Central London with the name ‘Baker Street Bazaar’. Over the years, the remarkably realistic replicas of well-known icons attracted more and more tourists and by today, the Madame Tussauds wax collection can be found in 24 museums across four continents. Each museum has its own individual character and is tailored to its specific country. For example, the wax museum in NYC exhibits important historical politicians from the United States, such as the former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln, while Hong Kong shows national heroes such as the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping.
Before manufacturing up to 50 wax figures each year at the professional Merlin Studios in London, Marie Tussaud used to create the sculptures in France and England mostly by herself. Although the figure making process has not significantly changed ever since, the material used has been upgraded to modern standards. On each figure, there are 15 professional wax artists working on specific parts of the sculpture, however, it still takes up to four months to complete a project and get it ready for exhibition. After measuring a celebrity and determining the exact hair and eye color, the first model is made out of clay, which allows forming the characteristic lineaments, before the moulding process with wax brings the celebrity to life. Last step in the process is the implementation of hair, eyes, teeth, as well as an oil paint for the skin tone and clothes. Et voilà - Your favorite icon has now a wax twin you can visit at Madame Tussauds in NYC!
